A WALKING DEAD Episode – Becoming a Blog of Adaptations

Hey! Rob here! It’s been a while since I’ve uploaded anything. Honestly a little too long. It feels as though I say that a lot. Quite a bit has happened in the last year, pretty crazy how much in fact. I’ve become much more in tune with my desires to be a writer. It really is an amazing feeling to have the same passion for writing and storytelling that my twin brother, Trevor, has. I have my first budgeted short film in production right now. It’s called “VOLLY!!” My brother is one of the leads in the project, along with him being my co-writer. The logo is posted below. Now onto the other reasoning for my post. I wanted to share a Walking Dead episode I wrote along with my brother. Our goal for writing this was to get into a fellowship with the NBC Writer’s Workshop as screenwriters. We didn’t make it in, but hey, as fans of the source material we had to try! So we put our brains together and decided to get back to the roots of TWD and write something a bit more personal, more character focused. Think of the critically lauded episode, “What Happened and What’s Going On.” This episode saw the final appearance of Tyreese, beautifully acted by Chad L. Coleman. I found this episode to be probably the most magnificently crafted episode of the series and one of the few that manages to bring me to tears every single time I see it.

Our goal was to write an episode that reached closer to that smaller, intimate sort of episode. One where we see the passing of a character, but in a way that slowly builds into it and leaves the viewer in shock at the end. A character that deserves a better ending, but doesn’t get one. One of our worst fears is dying alone and nobody ever knowing what happened to us. We were able to tackle this fear through a character focused journey between Daryl and Gabriel. While the episode is predominantly focused on Gabriel, we thought that the two of them could be an interesting pair to spend an hour with. What we did was set up pieces that would allow the characters to develop and grow in that set amount of time. It also gave us the chance to bring in probably the most terrifying threat in TWD, which would be The Whisperers.

Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard created a marvelous piece of storytelling and we feel honored to have had the chance to write an episode that featured our take on how the end of a character could bring about the Whisperer War. In every way that we could while writing this episode, we were careful to remain within the cannon of the comics/show that would accurately reflect what has happened. We hope that you enjoy our script and that it brings you the same joy we had writing it.

Dead Space Fan Made Script Adaptation: The Terrors of the USG Ishimura

I’ve been wanting to share this adaptation with everyone for quite some time, but my inability to overcome my insecurities about what people will think of my writing is what holds me back sometimes. However, I figure it’s about time I get over it and let the world read what I envisioned for this franchise if it ever made it to the big screen.


DEAD SPACE. What an incredible video game franchise. Blending the elements I love from Alien and Resident Evil 4 with the philosophical and religious subtext from popular genre films like The Wicker Man and Suspiria. While Dead Space drew inspiration from so many other horror franchises, it became it’s own force of nature with it’s unique visual approach on the future of mankind. Religion and science have always fought with one another, but I had never seen such a unique battle the way Dead Space presented. It was original, terrifying and stunning.

I knew that if I was to adapt something this vast, it would have to be carefully planned and with a passion from someone who holds it dear. Heck, I beat the first one on Impossible mode I loved it that much. If Dead Space were every to be made, the elements that needed to be developed further was Isaac Clarke himself. The set-pieces that the series is known for had to be there, along with some throwbacks to the game, but with a way to separate itself as more than just a copy of the game. He needed a personality more present in the second game and a more developed relationship with his girlfriend, Nicole. He required deeper motivations for volunteering to help the Ishimura and the hallucinations needed to showcase the terror of the Marker. I wanted to show the audience what happens to the mind as it succumbs to the Marker rather than tell it. Every character needed to feel real, that way when any of them fall the audience experiences that loss. Think the successful writing by James Cameron for any of the team from Aliens! They only needed charismatic lines and performances to solidify them as an important part of this story.

I wrote this film in a few months after extensive research into not just the novels by B.K. Evenson, but from the lore created by Visceral Games. I cared greatly about capturing Dead Space with respect and adoration. I worked hard to recreate Dead Space for a movie-going audience. Then I submitted the script to Congress for protection as my fan made adaptation, that way it would always be there for anyone to read if it were ever lost.

I finished the script back in fall of 2015 and it’s been sitting on my laptop ever since. I doubt my adaptation will ever be produced or see the light of day, but I wanted people to be able to read my version and come to their own conclusions. Is it successful or an embarrassing attempt? I want you to be the judge and tell me if you think it is a faithful adaptation of a beloved horror franchise.

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted Feature Film Script


My name is Robert Benoit and below you’ll find the script for the Uncharted feature film that I wrote with my brother Trevor and our close friend, Kyle.

The film focuses on an original story that would fit within the cannon of the Uncharted series, between Drake’s Fortune and Among Thieves. The main emphasis of the film is the breakdown of the relationship between Drake and Elena that led to the split into Drake’s partnership with Chloe Fraser. The story focuses on Drake having left the business following  Drake’s Fortune to build a life with Elena, however this all comes to a head when Harry Flynn contacts him about a job that would set him for life. All it would require is one meeting with a wealthy entrepreneur, Quinn, that is seeking a treasure from a museum that would complete his ancient Egyptian collection. Drake hides this new job from Elena in order to allow her to continue to think he quit the treasure hunting business. Things come to a head when Drake is double crossed by Quinn and must stop him from unleashing an unstoppable power that could destroy the world.

This script was written back in 2012 and has been completed for years. We had an agent at one point and the script may very well have landed on the desk of Naughty Dog, though no reply was ever given. Some similarities came about when playing Uncharted 4 that dealt with Drake hiding his return to treasure hunting to help out a friend, in this case his brother. Another thought on similarities comes from the relationship between Elena and Drake exploding from the lies and it ultimately ends with some rather deep dramatic exposition.

We want to say that Uncharted 4 was amazing and it was the best entry yet in the series, though definitely missing the supernatural elements of the series that made it so captivating.

We hope you give our script a read and see what admirers of the Uncharted franchise came up with. Share it with anyone that you think would love to read it and we hope that a fantastic Uncharted film comes to pass. The one that is in the works has no blessing from Neil Druckmann, which is very concerning.

Our script retains the supernatural elements that we felt were necessary to make a film adaptation successful. The characters retain their personalities from the video game, but with real interactions between them that further necessary development. We wanted the antagonist to be extravagant, but in a subtly obsessive compulsive sort of way. The film is light hearted at times and dark at others. Thanks for reading and hopefully you like it! Life is Strange: Chrysalis – Episode 1 Review


Life is strange. A fitting title for a game that attempts to capture the strangeness of every day life within extraordinary circumstances. Through the course of this first episode, it is hard not to be impressed by the grounded approach of Dontnod’s narrative drama.

Max Caulfield is the protagonist of Life is Strange, who attains the ability to rewind time through a visual interaction with a blue butterfly. While there is no exploitation for how she is chosen to attain these abilities, the mystery behind this is better left unsaid. When Max comes to the realization that she can relive moments she had previously experienced, she sets out to fix mistakes and save the people closest to her. Much like films of the same vein, such as The Butterfly Effect and Predestination, alternating events fated to occur can lead to permanent repercussions. This game brings up thought provoking questions within its ordinary setting and characters, albeit wading amongst some rocky dialog.

The game opens with a dreamlike sequence about a massive tornado aways off from the seaside cliffs the fictional town of Arcadia Bay. Max stands in awe of the tornado’s destruction before she wakes up within the confines of Blackwell Academy’s photography class. Her photography professor, Mr. Jefferson, is heckling the students about a photography contest that he hopes they will all enter. Once free from the class she stumbles to the bathroom to regain her composure, only to be the witness of a murder. In witnessing this altercation, she reaches out and time rewinds back to Mr. Jefferson’s class. It is here that Max begins to walk the fine line of altering decision-making that sets the stage for the four episodes that follow.

Through actions and conversations with the game’s wide array of characters, every word and action seems to have a weight that matches the intensity of Telltales’ episodic The Walking Dead series. The big difference between the two is that in LiS, you have the option to rewind time to change a decision after it is made. Max will respond with guilt or doubt about a decision that will urge you to see how another path might have played out. There is something realistic about making a decision and having to live with it, but this game allows for the ability to see how different things might have been if you had said something another way. LiS’ saving grace is the time control mechanic that exemplifies narrative branching paths far and above any other episodic series to date.

The fascinating part about playing through a decision based game is that the results of your actions do not become clear until further episodes, as one character might be an ally as opposed to a friend. Chrysalis scratches the surface of what extensive detail the plotting and writing could be capable of if handled right.

Many critics seemed to have indifference about the use of dialog within the game, calling it both laughable and unrealistic at times. During multiple conversations throughout the episode, there is a frequent use of the word “hella.” This seems to be a youthful lingo that is unique to this universe and Chloe’s favorite word to throw out in moments of sincerity or fear. While it may seem like a silly word, ask yourself this: was it not long ago that people were using the word “groovy” on a regular basis? Calling something “groovy” now sounds fictional in 2016. “Hella” is being used here in a similar fashion by a bunch of seniors in high school, which does not seem too farfetched or out of place.

Now while the storm is revealed to be a sort of endgame for LiS, there is more subtlety to the series that is sprinkled within the big moments. Every decision is going to lead to the end or the survival of Arcadia Bay, but exactly how this will become apparent is not going to become clear until further into this story. The subtlety that I speak of here are the characters and small moments with them because you are invested in it all from the get go. Student social media bullying, gun violence, and the abuse of authority are all fascinating themes that are introduced quickly and captivate the player all the way until the end of the first episode.

Max Caulfield must make choices that will determine the fate of those around her and is forced to live with the consequences. She is believable in every sense of the word and the characters around her are presented with a sense of realism I have no experienced in a video game outside of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. Each character has motives, each character has emotions, each character has pasts, and each character has a future depending on our heroine.

At the close of the episode, it is revealed that the most important piece of this game comes in the form of a missing girl named Rachel Amber. This will be the biggest mystery of the five episode series and we already begin to build a list of suspects who might have had it out for this missing Blackwell Academy student. I’m curious to see how the suspicions develop in the episodes to follow and where my expectations will meet reality.

Episode 1 is about connections and self-discovery. Max is a girl who is meeting all these people and maturing through these interactions. She begins to discover that she has the power to change people’s lives, for better or worse, and comes out of her shell in the process. While these powers of time control seem like a dream come true, they become a heavy weight above Max’s shoulder in ways that she has not felt before. Her character has never lived through loss the way that her best friend, Chloe, has. Chloe lost a father in a car accident, had her best friend go missing, and lost contact with Max for five years. It is hard not to relate to her struggles and hardship. Finding out these histories for characters allows them to become more real and transcend the polygons on the screen.

It is with these performances and fantastic writing that LiS transcends some of the high school stereotypes that appear within the first episode’s two hour run time. The closing shot sets the groundwork for a brilliant series that could very well be the most heartfelt episodic experience to date. While it seemed unrealistic to dig through someone’s room for personal information and clues right in front of them, this investigative mechanic helps to establish this universe on its own terms. This game lends itself to be the closest thing to a television-esque presentation, and along the ability to change how the story unfolds, allows it to become unlike anything else in gaming. I’m looking forward to where these decisions take me in Episode 2 – Out of Time and the consequences that will come in the wake of them.

Life is Strange succeeds in creating an engaging universe and presenting questions waiting to be answered, even if it struggles at times to overcome its own video game elements.

This is NOT a Blog (Or at least I don’t think it is)

It was a dark and stormy night… Not really. In fact, it is the middle of a hot summer day during the start of August. I just like to build the suspense and act all melodramatic once a while. As you might have guessed, my name is Robert Benoit. I’m your not so average, average twenty-three year old living the dream in central Massachusetts. I’ve never really managed a conversation that is meant to be permanently ongoing, I’ll probably end up saying something stupid or offensive at some point. Perhaps in the next post…or this one. Hopefully I’ll avoid the offending anybody part though. I guess the best way to break the ice is to jump head first and pray that I find my way back to the surface.

I’ll start with a bit of insight into my life, get the ball rolling and open up a bit. I’m about a year out of college now and I haven’t gone very far. My daytime work involves a part time in the Produce department at my local Wal-Mart and the other half is a content writing job at a small web design company.

I ask myself what I’m doing with my life. The most important questions I’ve asked myself today was, “How do they come up with the names for apples? Did somebody just make them up as they saw them or are they named after the founder of the apple?” Crap, I can’t believe I ever contemplated that. It is hard to keep my mind focused on what’s ahead when I’m seemingly stuck in the middle. Often I have to remind myself: Rob! What are your goals?! How are you going to get there?!

One of my ongoing goals in life is to become a screenwriter and potentially a director if I ever find the time. My passion is definitely ingrained predominantly in the writing portion of creativity. Some people say its amazing that I have written my first novel already, but I don’t think so. It has very little chance of being publishable and I’m not sure if it is even any good. I worry about everything that I write. Is it too pretentious? Is the prose weak? Do the characters accurately reflect people? Is the story a cohesive flowing arc or a mess?

I don’t want to be like John Green or Nicolas Sparks. I do not want to tear at the heart strings and write for money as opposed to truly standing out as an artist. I think it is too easy to settle and belch out a steaming pile of literature with no emotional payoff. I want to be the kind of writer who can cause others to think. To ask questions about themselves, about humanity, about the very foundation of our existence. God, I’m starting to sound like John Green by not trying to sound like John Green.

Do not get me wrong in reading my often sarcastic tone. In light of my amassing college debt that I’ll likely never pay off, I’m very happy with my life. I have goals, I have dreams. I see so many people around me with not inspiration, motivation, or aspiration. They’re content with just being, yet they complain about the daily grind. I refuse to get stuck in that mindset, to give in to the powers that be and coast for the rest of my life. I have to chase the goals because otherwise, what is the point of the passion that burns in me?

That is why I’m going to working a lot more towards what I want to do. I want to make short films in my spare time. I’m going to write more short stories in my spare time. I’m going to search for more writing gigs wherever I can. Anything to get my foot in the door somewhere or to simply get my name out there to people who might be interested in what I’m trying to do.

Do have the slightest idea where my life is going? Do I know where I’m supposed to be? Do I know how I’m going to get there? Not one bit. But as I work my way towards the answers I seek to those questions, this will be the place that the journey starts and keeps going. Whether or not it is one worth following, I haven’t the faintest idea. Apologies in advance and thanks for readings.
